The prototype currently contains all 22 of the cartoons that were featured in an exhibition at SFU's Belzberg Library in summer of 1999 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the opening of Simon Fraser University's Harbour Centre campus. The exhbition, titled "The Education of Filbert Phelps: Cartoons by Len Norris" was prepared by the Belzberg Library's Karen Marotz. Karen's introduction to the exhibition provides background information on Norris, his work, and SFU's collection.
Search results for each cartoon include the date of publication, the cartoon's caption, the categories that the images were put in for the exhibition, and a thumbnail image. The thumbnail is a hypertext link to the larger display image and its descriptive information. Users may choose not to display the thumbnails if they wish. The thumbnails measure approximately 150 x 150 pixels and the larger display versions approximately 700 x 700 pixels. The resolution of the images is 72 dots per inch. Both versions of the cartoons are in GIF format and are greyscale. Many of the images contain Norris' handwritten captions.
Users can limit searches by date using the YYYY-MM-DD format.
Clicking on the "Search" button without entering anything in the form will retrieve records for all the images.
Cartoons from the exhibition, along with Karen's commentary, are also available as a single web page you can browse.
